Common Duct Issues Pt. 1

Are Your Ducts The Issue?

Hello, welcome back to the North Central Florida Air Conditioning, Inc. blog! While in blogs past we have focussed mainly on the issues that most commonly plague people’s air conditioners and furnaces, today we thought we would talk about an area of your homes HVAC system that many people never think about: The ducts. If you think about it, the ducts in your home serve a pretty important function. Transporting all of that hot or cold air throughout your home is an important job; however, what happens when something goes wrong? In today’s post, we are going to list out some of the most common issues that plague ducts across Gainesville.

Don’t Take Your Ducts For Granted

We get it, you probably rarely think about your ducts or how they are doing. As the old saying goes, “out of sight out of mind;” however, we caution you to not take this approach when it comes to your home’s duct system. After all, if it weren’t for your ducts, your HVAC unit would not be able to properly heat or cool your home, even if absolutely everything else in the system was running perfectly. If you’ve noticed that your home isn’t being properly heated or cooled, look for these common duct issues.

  • Leaky Ducts: Although you may not be aware, leaking ductwork can cost you a lot of money. It is estimated that the average home loses around 20 – 40 percent of the air that travels through its ducts. If that seems like a large number to you, that’s because it is. Losing this much air causes major inefficiencies in your home’s HVAC system and it is very important that you do not allow more air to escape from your ducts than is absolutely necessary. To fix this issue, we here at North Central Florida Air Conditioning, Inc.,  suggest that you get your ducts inspected and sealed if any major leaks are found. Additionally, preventing leaks will better protect your ducts from outside pollutants and will increase the overall air quality of your home.
  • Faulty Registers: No, we aren’t talking about the registers that you see at the grocery store. Registers are those little metal plates that cover the openings that lead to your home’s duct work. If your home’s registers are not properly sealed at the duct connection, your ducts could be losing air before it ever even reaches the rooms in your home. As a result, your HVAC system has to work harder to heat or cool your home, putting more strain on the system, and causing you to spend more on your home’s energy bill. To remedy this situation, be sure to check around the registers of your home to ensure that they are properly sealed, are not wobbly or loose, and that they have a secure connection to the actual duct.

Join us again next time as we continue to go over common duct problems and, as always, if you are in need of duct repair or maintenance call the experts at North Central Florida Air Conditioning, Inc.
